Story of Sleipnir

It was one evening in Iceland when Ástvaldur, the founder of Sleipnir, sat down to watch the movie "Intouchables". The film tells the story of a French disabled man who hires an assistant to help him experience life’s adventures, leading to a profound impact on his life.

Ástvaldur watched the movie with his young son, who, coincidentally, also lived with a degenerative disease. As they watched, Ástvaldur experienced a moment of enlightenment. Inspired by the film, he became determined to bring more adventure and joy into his son's life, transforming it from one of static limitation to one filled with movement and joy. 

And so it began—the creation of the first Sleipnir truck.

Ástvaldur had experience in transforming trucks and vehicles. Back in 1990, he built a 15-passenger Unimog truck that could drive on snow. In 1997, he traveled to Canada to explore trucks over glaciers with tourists. In 2000, he built a 4-axle truck that could also float on snow, although it was quite slow.

Clearly, his passion lay in big vehicles and snow. So, the family decided to build a luxurious truck that could take travellers on top of glaciers.

For the next few months, Ástvaldur and his family embarked on an incredible journey of exploring glacier routes and traveling the world to find parts that would eventually become the first Sleipnir truck in 2017.

The Sleipnir truck is an incredible vehicle. It can cruise at higher speeds than most other monster trucks, float on snow, and drive in any weather conditions, which can be quite hectic in Iceland. The truck has independent suspensions on all wheels, making glacier travel more accessible to people and open the doors to even more adventures for those  with reduced mobility. The chassis on Sleipnir 2, or vehicle frame, is from Tatra, a Czech truck company. Tatra modified the chassis to fit Sleipnir's specifications for driving on glaciers. The passenger cabin was designed and built in Iceland by Sleipnir Glacier Tours.

Ástvaldur's passion and determination turned into a vehicle that not only brought joy and adventure to his son but also made the wonders of Iceland’s glaciers accessible to many others.

The second Sleipnir truck was built in 2020.

Ástvaldur's son, Ingvi, passed away in March 2021.

Despite this profound loss, the legacy of Ingvi's adventurous spirit and the inspiration behind Sleipnir lives on. Ástvaldur's creation continues to bring joy and adventure to many, fulfilling the dream he once had for his son—making the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland accessible to all especially those with reduced mobility. 

Today, Sleipnir still remains a family run company with the third monster truck soon to be ready.
