Helpful Icelandic phrases for Your First Visit to Iceland


When planning a trip to the land of fire and ice, it's always a good idea to arm yourself with a few local phrases. Iceland may be a small country, but its language is rich and vibrant, with roots dating back to the age of the Vikings!


While the vast majority of Icelanders are proficient in English, they deeply appreciate it when visitors take the time to learn a bit of the local language. Not only does it show respect for Icelandic culture, it can also serve as a wonderful ice breaker (pun intended) when interacting with locals.

Whether you're haggling at a Reykjavik market, asking for directions in the vast Icelandic wilderness, or just trying to order a coffee in a local café, here are 30 essential Icelandic phrases to get you started

Let's start with the basics:

  • Halló! - Hello! A cheerful and universal greeting that's sure to be reciprocated.
  • Góðan dag! - Good day! This can be used throughout the day to greet people.
  • Gott kvöld! - Good evening! A polite greeting to use as the sun begins to set.
  • Bless! - Goodbye! This is a universal phrase for bidding farewell.
  • Takk! - Thank you! Express gratitude in Icelandic, a small word that goes a long way.
  • Gjörðu svo vel! - You're welcome! The perfect response when someone thanks you.
  • Afsakið! - Excuse me! Use this phrase to politely gain someone's attention or to apologize for a small inconvenience.
  • Já! - Yes! Affirmative responses in Icelandic are as simple as this one.
  • Nei! - No! When you need to express disagreement or decline something.


Master Basic Questions:

  • Hvað heitir þú? - What is your name?
  • Hvar er klósettið? - Where is the restroom?
  • Hvað kostar þetta? - How much is this?
  • Ertu með Wi-Fi? - Do you have Wi-Fi?
  • Hvað er þetta? - What is this?
  • Get ég fengið vatn? - Can I get some water?


Surviving at a Restaurant or Café:

  • Einn kaffi, takk. - One coffee, please. Icelandic coffee culture is thriving; don't miss out!
  • Viltu mæla með einhverju? - Can you recommend something?
  • Get ég fengið matseðilinn? - Can I have the menu?
  • Ég er með ofnæmi. - I have an allergy


Learn Numbers 1-5:

  • Einn - One. Whether you're counting waterfalls or puffins, start here.
  • Tveir - Two. Ideal when purchasing a pair of famous Icelandic woolen gloves.
  • Þrír - Three. Essential when tasting the trio of Icelandic liquorice, caramel, and chocolate.
  • Fjórir - Four. Perfect for planning a day-trip to the four quarters of Reykjavik.
  • Fimm - Five. When admiring the five distinct geysers of the Geysir geothermal area.


Other Useful Phrases:

  • Ég skil ekki. - I don't understand. It's perfectly fine if you can't follow an Icelandic conversation. Saying this phrase will most likely prompt the person to switch to English.
  • Talar þú ensku? - Do you speak English?
  • Ég er týnd/ur. - I'm lost.
  • Hvað er klukkan? - What is the time?
  • Ég er frá... - I am from...
  • Hvar er næsta hótel? - Where is the nearest hotel?
